A: Dr. Harness Answers the Question

In this clip, Jay Harness, MD, FACS explains what Ductal Carcinoma In Situ is and some treatment strategies.

"Ductal carcinoma in situ is an overgrowth of abnormal cells inside the ducts that lie in the breast, and as those cells overgrow and proliferate and become thick, they tend to make us by-product calcium, and that's what we can see with mammograms as a way of potentially diagnosing in situ breast cancer.

But the bottom line is that the in situ breast cancer is confined inside the ducts. It's not growing through the walls of the ducts, so that if you can remove that entire area of the in situ breast cancer, theoretically, the patient can be cured. "
